Composition

In this project, we were assigned to create an interesting composition with the items of a still life by combining items that were not truly together by making the items bigger or smaller or just by changing the viewpoint in which we were drawing them from.

For my composition, I decided to take pictures of different items and put them together in photoshop; I was able to enlarge items easier, as well as stack items as if they were genuinely positioned like that in real life. The piece was done on Rives BFK paper with charcoal pencils, as well as compressed charcoal. The overall drawing consists of a skeleton lying on black fabric, with grapes on its rib cage and flowers, a sphere, and a slim pyramid on its pelvic bone; in the background, the bottom part of another skeleton can be seen. As you look at the piece, you start from the flowers move up to the skeleton, then to the ring behind the skeleton, and finally back down to the fabric and then the background.

The style in which it was done was loose and not realistic, as my usual pieces since it was done with charcoal. The goal was not realism, but rather to use the space, positive and negative successfully, which is something I somewhat did in the foreground but not so much in the background, where items seemed to lack. My use of darks and lights were done well and created depth in the drawing, but I could have added more.
