Final Project: 30 Series and Self Portrait
In ART 240, our final grade was composed of two projects; a 30 piece series and a self portrait. For my 30 piece series I decided to focus on my personal life and experiences. In the beginning, I took many pictures that I wanted to draw, but as I began to draw them, I felt like they were too posed so I waited for certain events to occur every day. Because I was focusing on myself, it was rather easy to complete the series since the subject was always at hand. I believe that on this series, I experimented and learned much about my creative process and execution of ideas. Though i played it safe with my material usage, I tried different techniques I had not tried so in depth. I also realized that as time went on, my pieces became more simple, not because I was running out of time(I was actually very good at managing my time for all projects) but rather because I learned how to apply meaning into my pieces while keeping it simple and getting the topic across.
For my self portrait, I decided to take many pictures of myself that were extremely posed; something I tried to avoid in my 30 series. A requirement for this project was for it to only be done in pencil This is because I was inspired by childhood pictures, pictures that were very much forced but had a certain elegance to them. As you look at the drawing, you can see that the pose is very typical of that of old time portrait paintings, very sophisticated; but as you look at the hands, the way the leg seems to be forced into frame and the facial expression, it makes the viewer think of what is causing all that tension, yet feel a certain type of ease as they look at the soft wrinkles that the sheets form.
In my personal opinion, I believe my series was not all that well executed even though I had a plan, but my self portrait is definitely one of my stronger pieces this semester. As I look back at my other pieces from my other art class and the semester in general, I do think I had a major improvement when it came to skills, but I do believe I need to work on my creative process a bit more, to create more condense pieces.
