6 Small Drawings

For my six (seven) studies, I mainly focused on the items that I could see from my desk. In the beginning, I played it safe and only used graphite pencils, but towards the end, I began to use vine charcoal and a sharpie marker, along with changing my style a bit. The forms that make up my studies seem to be very centric and don’t seem to relate to the edge of the page as much, aside from two pieces (the skull was done in black paper with a white chalk pencil and the apple and jar where I used vine charcoal).

One main problem with the studies is that the same subjects can be seen in multiple studies (lacking the diversity of objects); it is possible that if you connected all the drawings, you could get a panorama of the bottom part of the still life. Though this is an issue, the shapes and edges do seem to be defined and are somewhat different from picture to picture. Another main issue with the studies is the fact that there is not much going, the pictures are not interesting in composition but rather basic. The drawing of the skull on black paper, along with the semi contour line of the chair and the semi dottism study of the cone, seem to be the most interesting of the bunch since different techniques and materials were used.

Something that worked very well in a few of the studies (2nd and 3rd on the middle row, as well as the top,  left study) is the amount of detail applied to the objects. The first study on the third row seems to be the most successful one since I really pushed the values on the objects, allowing it to have more depth, and really stand out from the rest of the pieces. The second study on the middle row is also a strong one but could have been better if the darks were pushed in more, allowing for more volume to be created. In the next project, I will try to add more values in my drawings, as well as spend less time on the details and relax my style. I will also create more interesting compositions from different angles and diverse materials
