Image Analysis: “La Creación”
In 1922-1923, Diego Rivera painted his first mural named “La Creación.” This mural was also the first government-commissioned project Diego Rivera was given. Because the painting was done after the American revolution, it shows the rebirth of Mexican culture. During its creation, there were many movements to revive Mexican culture, and so that is what this mural shows. It shows the Mexican ideals such as religion (the holy trinity represented by three hands pointing to the people and the angels above), hope (the sun’s rays going down to earth), and prosperity (the plants growing in front of a man that looks like Jesus). This piece shows the religious aspect of human origin; he includes Adam and Eve, as well as the snake. His style seems like a combination of renaissance elements, as well as cubist elements. It is also important to note that he used an Egyptian method to paint this mural; he used paint mixed with beeswax. Some of the Renaissance elements are the saints, or holy people depicted, as well as the golden stars and the suns rays. Though it has religious aspects, it is modern too; accepting all of the people, unity in all even saints and sinners. The mood of this mural is optimistic, seeing everything will be in peace like it was in the beginning, no war just harmony.
